"to conduct a full and honest debate on the future of the Department of Veterans Affairs and the services and benefits provided to our veterans, including those who have served as peacekeepers. And that we further call upon the Government of Canada to respect the will of Parliament and immediately implement any motions or legislation passed by the House of Commons recommending changes to better serve our veterans.

Ombudsman slams 'deceptive' Veterans Affairs
Veterans ombudsman Pat Stogran expressed his fury at a news conference in Ottawa on Tuesday over the federal government's treatment of servicemen and women.

That’s Stogran, in the lower left-hand corner of the pamphlet, just back from Afghanistan. Then Lt.-Col. Pat Stogran (he’s now retired) commanded the Princess Pats in Afghanistan that year.

That’s a Canadian Alliance pamphlet, promising soldiers the party would “demonstrate (our) pride by giving the Canadian Forces the support and respect they so rightly deserve.”

“I’ve been window dressing before. And treated as such,” Stogran said.

Parkwood Hospital is closing 72 beds and laying off staff as the number of Second World War and Korean War veterans cared for at the London facility continues to decline.

The hospital announced Tuesday that the first 36 beds will be closed in September, followed by another 36 a year later.

Arguably, the worst thing that could happen to Canada’s shrinking number of WWII and Korea veterans (now down to about 150,000) and the growing number of Afghanistan vets, would be the blending on Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) into the Department of National Defence (DND).
